TOEFL Exam Syllabus 2022 “Are you not getting selected in any big international company despite having a requisite degree/diploma? Educational Testing Service (ETS) is the body that conducts the TOEFL exam.  It aims to measure the level of proficiency of a non-native English speaker to communicate in English. Candidate’s abilities are measured in all parameters like- reading, writing, speaking or listening.

TOEFL Exam Syllabus:

TOEFL is conducted on the following TOEFL Exam Syllabus. 

TOEFL Exam Reading:

• Duration: 60-80 minutes
• Score range: 0 to 30
• Total number of questions: 36 to 56
• May have three or four passages
• Each passage is followed by a set of questions based on the passage which need to be answered.

 TOEFL Exam Listening:

• Duration: 60-90 minutes
• Score range: 0 to 30
• Total number of questions: 34 to 51
• You will be required to carefully listen to audio recordings of academic lectures, classroom discussions, and conversations
• Each recording will have questions based on the lectures/discussions which will need to be answered.

TOEFL Exam Speaking:

• Duration: 20 minutes
• Score range: 0 to 30
• Total number of speaking tasks: 6
• You will be required to express your opinion on a familiar topic
• You will be required to speak based on the listening and reading tasks
• 3 sections with 2 questions in each section.

TOEFL Exam Writing:

• Duration: 50 minutes
• Score range: 0 to 30
• You will be required to write essay responses based on the reading and listening tasks
• You will be required to support an opinion in writing

TOEFL Test Procedure:

Following is the procedure for the TOEFL Exam. 

1. The TOEFL test is administered via the internet at secure, authorised TOEFL test centres around the world.
2. Instructions for answering questions are given with each section. 
3. Test takers can take notes throughout the entire test. 
4. At the end of testing, all notes are collected and destroyed to ensure test security.
5. For the Speaking section, test takers wear headphones and speak into a microphone. Responses are recorded and sent to the ETS Online Scoring Network where they are scored by a combination of human raters and AI scoring. 
6. For the Writing section, test takers type their responses. Responses are sent to the ETS Online Scoring Network. 
7. The TOEFL test uses both AI and human scoring for the Writing section. 
8. All human raters are trained and certified by ETS and are continuously monitored throughout the day each time they rate.
9. Scores are reported online.

TOEFL Score Requirements:

1. Each institution sets its own requirements for TOEFL scores.
2. These minimums depend on factors such as the applicant’s field of study.
3. The level of study for e.g. undergraduate or graduate, whether the applicant will be a teaching assistant and whether the institution offers English as a Second Language support for its students.
